Japan Rail Pass Coverage and JR Network Exclusions

The pass covers more than 19,000 kilometers of JR routes, but Japan’s transport system also includes municipal subways and many private railways. A correct itinerary labels every segment as covered, discounted or separately ticketed.

SEPARATE FARES

Subways & Private Railways

Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, Osaka Metro and many private operators require separate fares. Some JR trains run over non-JR track, creating an additional charge even when the train itself looks like a through service.

SHINKANSEN LIMITS

Nozomi, Mizuho & Premium Cars

The pass alone does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho. A passholder-only supplement can unlock an eligible segment. GranClass and certain special compartments also require additional limited-express or accommodation charges.

Japan Rail Pass 7, 14 and 21-Day Options

Validity runs on consecutive calendar days. The strongest purchase window groups expensive journeys tightly while leaving Tokyo, Kyoto or resort stay days outside the pass whenever practical.

7 CONSECUTIVE DAYS

¥50,000 Ordinary · ¥70,000 Green

Best for a compact period of frequent long-distance travel. A Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka plan alone commonly does not justify the nationwide pass; additional meaningful journeys are needed.

14 CONSECUTIVE DAYS

¥80,000 Ordinary · ¥110,000 Green

Useful when travel reaches western, northern or multiple regions without long stationary intervals. Compare regional passes if the trip concentrates in only one JR company’s territory.

21 CONSECUTIVE DAYS

¥100,000 Ordinary · ¥140,000 Green

Provides the lowest average daily cost but requires a genuinely rail-intensive itinerary. Flights can still outperform rail when connecting Japan’s farthest islands or preserving vacation time.

PRACTICAL STANDARD

Ordinary Pass

Comfortable seating, broad availability and reserved-seat access on covered trains make Ordinary sufficient for most travelers. Child pricing for ages 6–11 is half the applicable adult rate.

QUIETER UPGRADE

Green Pass

Green cars generally provide wider seating, greater pitch and a calmer cabin. Green facilities are not present on every train, and the pass does not grant GranClass.

Japan Rail Pass Seat Reservations and Shinkansen Rules

Official Online Purchase

Passes purchased through the official JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation site can reserve eligible seats online before arrival. The physical reserved-seat ticket must still be collected at a compatible machine or JR ticket office.

After Pickup

Scan the pass QR code or enter its reservation number at a compatible reserved-seat machine, supply the passport number and select the train. A Midori-no-madoguchi or Travel Service Center can also assist.

Oversized Baggage

On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen, luggage totaling more than 160 cm and up to 250 cm requires a seat reservation with an oversized-baggage area. Book it before boarding.

Peak Japanese travel periods include Golden Week, Obon and New Year. Covered reservations carry no normal seat-reservation charge, but availability is never guaranteed and duplicate speculative bookings can be restricted.

Multiple long-distance sectors can make a seven-day pass competitive when sequenced tightly. Hikari and Sakura keep the core route covered, while city subways and private sightseeing railways remain separate.

Long Shinkansen distances and limited-express connections create substantial ticket value. Compare a JR East regional pass and separate Hokkaido tickets before choosing the nationwide product.

A long pass can support multi-region exploration when rail days remain frequent. Consider a domestic flight for the farthest jump, then use regional rail strategically rather than forcing every segment onto one pass.

SECTION 6 · PURCHASE, PICKUP & USE

Japan Rail Pass Eligibility and Activation

Eligibility and purchase method determine the pickup process. Visitors generally need Temporary Visitor immigration status, the original passport used for purchase and matching personal details. A photocopy is not a substitute.

STEP 1

Choose Purchase Channel

Official online purchase enables advance seat booking. An overseas JR-designated agency issues an Exchange Order, which must be exchanged in Japan under its validity and eligibility rules.

STEP 2

Select the Start Date

Choose the first day of the seven, 14 or 21-day consecutive period carefully. Once issued, the pass type and validity period cannot simply be changed to rescue poor timing.

STEP 3

Use Gates and Tickets

Insert the physical pass at compatible automatic gates and retrieve it on the other side. Keep separate reserved-seat and Nozomi/Mizuho tickets together; IC-only gates require staff assistance.

Protect the Original Pass

A lost or stolen pass is generally not reissued. Keep it secure, avoid bending or damaging the magnetic ticket and retain the physical credit card used for an official online purchase if a pre-use refund might be necessary. Once travel begins, service disruption does not automatically extend the validity period or reimburse hotels and alternate transportation.

Who is eligible for the Japan Rail Pass?

The nationwide pass is primarily for visitors entering Japan with Temporary Visitor status for sightseeing. Eligibility is checked against the passport and immigration status; travelers should not assume that every visa or residence category qualifies.

Can I ride Nozomi and Mizuho trains with the pass?

Not with the pass alone. Passholders may purchase a separate NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket for an eligible train, class and route segment. Otherwise, use covered Hikari, Sakura, Kodama or Tsubame services where applicable.

Are seat reservations included?

Reservations for most covered Shinkansen and limited-express trains do not carry an additional reservation fee. They can be made online only for passes bought through the official reservation website, or after pass pickup at eligible machines and ticket offices.

Does the Japan Rail Pass cover subways?

It covers participating JR services, including useful urban JR lines such as Tokyo’s Yamanote Line. Municipal and private subways, most non-JR railways and local buses are not automatically included.

Is the nationwide JR Pass always worth buying?

No. Since the 2023 price increase, many short Golden Route trips cost less with individual tickets. The pass becomes more competitive when several long-distance covered journeys fit inside seven, 14 or 21 consecutive days.
