THE SLOWEST EXPRESS TRAIN IN THE WORLD
The Glacier Express makes a roughly eight-hour panoramic crossing between Zermatt and St. Moritz, traversing 291 bridges and 91 tunnels through three Swiss cantons. Its drama comes from engineering and geography rather than speed: the Rhine Gorge, Oberalp Pass, Albula Line and Matterhorn country unfold through glass-roofed coaches. SECTION 2 · CLASS & PANORAMIC EXPERIENCE
Every class follows the same spectacular line and includes panoramic glazing, an audio guide, power and digital information. The upgrade decision concerns seating density, meal service and personal space—not access to a secret section of scenery.
Four seats face one another around each table. This is the most economical full-route experience and works well for independent travelers using a 2nd-class Swiss Travel Pass, Eurail or point-to-point ticket. Meals can be pre-ordered and served at the seat.
A two-plus-one arrangement provides wider seats, fewer passengers per carriage and easier movement. It is a valuable comfort upgrade on an eight-hour day, but requires a 1st-class ticket or pass as well as the same mandatory standard reservation.
Excellence Class operates only on the complete Zermatt–St. Moritz route in either direction. Lounge-style guaranteed window seating, concierge service, luggage help, a five-course menu with wine and Glacier Bar access make it an experience tier rather than simply a larger seat.
SECTION 3 · ROUTE & PACING
The route can be booked end to end or in selected sections. The full journey delivers the strongest narrative, but shorter segments can reduce cost and fit a multi-city Swiss itinerary. Add hotel nights at both ends instead of treating this as a commuter transfer.
Depart car-free Zermatt beneath the Matterhorn, descend the Matter Valley and reach Brig in the Rhône corridor. A pre-journey Zermatt stay protects the departure and gives the landscape time to become part of the trip.
The train climbs to the 2,033-metre Oberalp Pass before following the young Rhine toward the dramatic limestone walls of the Rhine Gorge. Snow, weather and daylight change this middle chapter throughout the year.
After Chur, the Rhaetian Railway uses spirals, tunnels and stone viaducts to gain elevation. The Landwasser Viaduct and Albula Line provide the signature finale before arrival in the Engadin.
SECTION 4 · INCLUSIONS & FINE PRINT
Every traveler needs both a valid rail ticket or accepted pass and a mandatory seat reservation. A pass can reduce or cover the ticket portion, but never removes the reservation fee.
In 1st and 2nd Class, meals are optional and advance ordering is recommended. Excellence Class includes its five-course menu, wine accompaniment, soft drinks and concierge-style service.
The Glacier Express is a daytime panoramic service with no cabins or overnight accommodation. Hotels, luggage forwarding, local transfers and connecting trains must be planned separately.
SECTION 5 · BEST TIME TO TRAVEL
There is no universally best season. Winter creates the most graphic snow scenery; summer offers long light and easy connections; autumn can add golden forests. Published maintenance closures and shorter daylight matter as much as temperature.

Green valleys, waterfalls and long daylight make the entire route easy to appreciate. Demand is high, so reservation release dates matter.
Golden foliage can be beautiful, but the official 2026 timetable lists no Glacier Express service from October 11 through December 4.
SECTION 6 · 2026 PRICING & RESERVATIONS
For the complete route, the published full 2nd-class fare is up to CHF 159 plus a CHF 54 reservation, for a reference total of CHF 213. The full 1st-class fare is up to CHF 272 plus reservation. Excellence Class requires that 1st-class ticket or pass plus its CHF 540 reservation.
Published reference combines a full-fare CHF 159 ticket and CHF 54 reservation. A valid Swiss Travel Pass, Eurail or other accepted product can replace or discount the ticket portion.
Use the correct 1st-class pass or point-to-point ticket, then add the compulsory reservation. Reserve meals separately if desired.
The reservation includes the premium service program, but a full-route 1st-class ticket or accepted 1st-class pass remains mandatory.

SECTION 7 · FAQ & PRE-TRIP LOGISTICS
Stay near the departure station, pack lightly and avoid a same-evening international flight. Zermatt is car-free, St. Moritz rail connections take time and the full Glacier Express day is intentionally long. Meal orders, dietary needs, mobility assistance and luggage transfer should be settled before travel—not on the platform.
The Swiss Travel Pass covers the applicable rail ticket, but it does not cover the mandatory Glacier Express seat reservation. A 1st-class pass or ticket is required for 1st Class and Excellence Class.
Standard 1st- and 2nd-class reservations are currently released 93 days before travel. Excellence Class reservations open for the published timetable season, while its required rail ticket is generally sold from 180 days before travel.
There is no permanently best side because the train changes direction and the scenery alternates. Glacier Express does not guarantee a seat facing the direction of travel; panoramic windows provide broad views from either side.
Space at the seat is limited. Pack a manageable bag, use hotel-to-hotel luggage forwarding when appropriate, and keep documents, medication and valuables with you.
It has seasonal pauses. The published 2026 timetable states that service will not run from October 11 through December 4, 2026. Dates remain subject to change.
